Program Introduction
The Master of Science in Mathematics program at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) offers students opportunities to develop advanced knowledge and research capabilities in both pure and applied mathematics. The program provides in-depth education in traditional mathematical fields such as analysis, algebra, geometry, and topology, as well as in applied areas including financial mathematics, computational mathematics, probability theory, and combinatorics. Students can enhance their mathematical thinking, analytical abilities, and problem-solving skills under the guidance of world-renowned faculty members. This program is designated as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field, allowing international students to benefit from up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. Carnegie Mellon's Mathematics Master's program features a flexible curriculum that allows students to customize their learning path according to their academic interests and professional goals. The program typically spans 3-4 semesters, during which students take advanced courses in various mathematical disciplines and optionally conduct research projects or theses. Additionally, the program encourages an interdisciplinary approach, providing students with opportunities to integrate mathematics with other fields such as computer science, statistics, engineering, and physics. Graduates of the program develop a solid mathematical foundation that prepares them for various career paths including doctoral studies, industry research positions, data analysis, financial modeling, and software development.
