Program Introduction

The Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences (DEEPS) undergraduate program at Brown University provides comprehensive education for understanding the physical, chemical, and biological systems of Earth and other planets. The program encompasses diverse fields including geology, geochemistry, geophysics, planetary science, climatology, and oceanography, enabling students to develop abilities to understand and address major challenges such as complex interactions within Earth systems, environmental changes, natural disasters, natural resource management, and planetary formation and evolution. This program has received STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) designation, allowing international students to benefit from up to three years of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. The DEEPS undergraduate program combines classroom learning with practical experiences, providing students with the tools and knowledge necessary to solve real-world problems. Students gain hands-on experience through state-of-the-art laboratories, field investigations, computer modeling, and data analysis opportunities. In line with Brown's open curriculum philosophy, the program offers flexibility for students to customize their learning path according to their interests and career goals. Students prepare for diverse career paths addressing global challenges such as climate change, sustainable resource management, planetary exploration, and natural disaster mitigation, developing the ability to seek innovative solutions at the forefront of the field through close collaboration with faculty and participation in research.
